Alexander Lacazette became the only player to score the first goal in two different Premier League seasons – 2017/18 and 2020/21.
Our striker turned the ball in from close range from a rebound of an initial Willian attempt.
He spoke to the press after the match and insisted that he is happy at Arsenal despite rumours of his departure.
Reacting to the performance, he said:
Yes, it was the best way to start the season. We wanted to win today and get the clean sheet. Defensively I think we did some good stuff and respected what the coach wanted. At the end, we won so everyone is happy today.
He also reacted to Mikel’s comments throughout the game.
He wants us to be perfect. We work a lot in the week for this kind of game because we know it’s really important for the season. Yeah, we have to respect what we wants.
There is a lot of competition for places in the team, and Lacazette thinks it’s a good thing for the club.
Yes, for the team, for the club. We have a lot of big ambition. We know Auba is going to score a lot of goals this season. I want to help the team to be on top, I know it’s my job. It’s not for me to [just] play and do the link-ups so I will try and do my best this season.
He insists he is happy at the club and all the negativity is from the press.
I am really happy. It’s only the press that says I’m not happy. From the beginning I’ve said I am happy at Arsenal and I want to play and win titles. We won a title last month so I am happy with Arsenal.
Alexander Lacazette has two years left on his current Arsenal contract. He has been a subject of speculation about a move away from the club this window.
