The Window is Open – WengerTime

“The transfer market really starts now, a lot of activity will happen between now and 2nd September. We have 12 days, a lot will happen. It starts now.” –Wenger speaking after the 3-0 win at Istanbul

Really starts now? In which window did players like Falcao, Cavani, Higuain, Navas, Fernandinho, Neymar and the likes move? In fact considering the amount of activity that has occurred since the Neymar transfer it seems so far back one would be forgiven if you assumed it was done during the January transfer window. Last summer transfer business was done so well bar the departure of Robin Van Persie we all assumed the club had learnt from the transfer madness two seasons ago when only a humiliating defeat at Old Trafford seemed to have finally made us react. Podolski and Giroud were signed nice and early giving them enough time to bed into the team and have a proper preseason. Fair play to Wenger though, Santi Cazorla, our stand out performer last season was signed late in the window.

It’s almost like Wenger needed some confirmation of our presence in the Champions league for him to make his moves as no sooner had we wonderfully dispatched Fenerbache in the first leg of the encounter did news of bids for Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria from Real start to surface largely due to information from David Ornstein  known to be largely factual with information on social media. Big players love to play in the Champions league and it seems that’s the card Wenger intends to dangle in front of potential bids. I’m personally surprised Benzema would be allowed to leave Real even if they purchase Bale,Ronaldo can play in the CF position but to have just him there with no world class backup is not something I feel Real would do especially as Liverpool have made it clear Suarez is not for sale.

cabaye

An initial 10million pounds bid for Newcastles Yohan Cabaye was promptly rejected by Mike Ashley with his now famous line ‘which part of him do you want to buy’ comment.  The club is expected to go back with an improved offer of about 15million. There is some apathy towards this transfer as some fans feel we have enough ball playing mid fielders in the club already and would rather we sign someone who is more defensively suited to play with Arteta or act as his back up. I personally sanction this move, we might have Rosicky, Cazorla and Wilshere  but of the three only Cazorla can guarantee an Injury free season, Cabaye would definitely aid in this regard, add the fact that he is good with freekicks I’ll readily add him into the team as we could do with some goals from dead ball situations.

vicenteIt seems Wenger might finally bow to superior reason and sign a goal keeper to challenge with Wojciech Szczesny as he seemed yet unconvincing in the defeat to Aston Villa, have to give him credit for his performance at Istanbul though. Consistency has been his major undoing and some serious competition in his position can only do him good.  We put in a bid for Valencia keeper Vicente Guaita, a bid was described as derisory by Valencia President as he rates Guaita very highly.

Guaita is a class keeper and we have no need to sell,’ ‘To allow him to go, we would study the price. Currently the value is £25million (€30m). At Valencia what we want is to continue, although his agents have reported that if you are a substitute, you had better find a way out.- Salva (Valencia President)

For a reserve goal keeper to be valued at this outrageous amount by Valencia just shows you how terrible the market is now.  See Guaita stats for last season culled from espn.com

At this market value I would be very surprised if Wenger went back especially when he could as well make a bid for Begovic who in my opinion is miles ahead of any goal keeper currently in the premier league.

flaminiThe day ended with rumours of an impending return of Flamini. It is public knowledge that he had been training with us recently to keep fit as he had been released from his deal by AC Milan. That we need bodies in the defensive midfield position is even made more important by the loss of Arterta for 6weeks at least.  Can Flamini do a job there as a squad player? I very much believe so. However to sign Flamini on a free and not sign a proper midfielder and try to make us see Flamini like some new signing just as Diaby is whenever he is back from his long spells off is what we cannot accept. Flamini can fill in so many roles in the defense but some real quality is needed there.

Wenger says the window is open again, and he is willing to act in it. I am serioiusly hoping he has an open cheque book also as to go into this season with just Yaya Sanogo and all our current losses due to injuries andwill be digging our grave.
