You can’t trust the Arsenal Defenders – Gary Neville to Mikel Arteta

by SimonSEEZ

Arsenal yesterday announced the signing of four players for extended periods with three of the four being defenders. Whilst David Luiz signed for another year, Cedric Soares and Pablo Mari are signed for much longer periods. The Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has spoken glowingly about these players, however, there is a lot ruckus as to the quality of these signings and if Arsenal is set to make improvement in the next season. Since joining the club, Head Coach Mikel Arteta has focused on the defending and before the lockdown, the club successfully kept three clean sheets in four games. Though this form seems to have dissipated since the return of football.

Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast the former Man United defender told Mikel Arteta

It doesn’t matter how many times he changes the shape of the team, individuals will ultimately scupper Arsenal’s defence. You just can’t trust Arsenal, you haven’t been able to for years.

“We’ve all said it. Mikel Arteta – we should still say that the shape Arsenal are playing, the shape they have defensively I think is better than it was previously but the individuals within that will let you down.

“It doesn’t matter how well you coach the shape, if you get exposed one on one or defenders make mistakes – as we saw in that game against Manchester City and against Brighton – then you’re just going to get punished.”

To close Gary stated, They just need defenders with better concentration.

To be honest, it is hard to argue with anything Gary said, we have seen first-hand from Liverpool how their team improved since the signing of Virgi van Dijk.  Though a case can be made as well that they also signed a massive goalkeeper behind and have some of the most energetic midfielders in the league playing in front of their defence.
